In the time of swords and periwigs and full-skirted coats with flowered lappets - when gentlemen wore ruffles and gold laced waistcoats of paduasoy and taffeta - there lived a tailor in Gloucester. He sat in the window of a little shop in Westgate Street, cross legged on a table, from morning till dark. All day long while the light lasted, he sewed and snippeted, piecing out his satin and pompadour and lutestring; stuffs had strange names, and were very expensive in the days of the tailor of Gloucester. 1. They're baaaaccck, Tracy sing-songed as she passed by where I was trying to study. I didn't look up. "Who?" "Them." She gestured with her chin. I finally looked up to see the small group of Marines coming into the restaurant where I worked part-time. I snorted and looked back down at my book. "I guess they can come in if they want to," I said, turning a page. "This is a restaurant and they have to eat." "And flirt with everything in a skirt." She paused, looking over at me. "Aren't you going over there? They are sitting down in your section." Damn, she was right. I closed my book. So much for studying. I grabbed the menus and headed over to the table where the men sat, talking. As I approached, I took a moment to check them out. They were military judging by their short buzzed haircuts. There was a base nearby and a lot of the personnel came in for lunch or dinner with their families or friends. Between them and the locals, this place stayed pretty busy. "Good evening, gentlemen," I said as I placed a menu in front of each man. They looked up, smiling and nodding in greeting. "What would you like to drink?" One of the men, a handsome blond with clear blue eyes, looked up at me. "You," he answered, giving me a wink. The other men laughed at his joke. I gave him a smile. "You're funny," I answered. He leaned back in the... Happy ever after ending. No cliffhangers! 1. Language: English. Narrator: Theresa Stephens. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/091292/bk_acx0_091292_sample.mp3. Charles Gordon MacArthur (November 5, 1895, Scranton, Pennsylvania April 21, 1956, New York City) was an American playwright and screenwriter. The son of a Baptist minister, he is best known for his plays with Ben Hecht, Ladies and Gentlemen (filmed as Perfect Strangers), Twentieth Century and the frequently filmed The Front Page, which was based in part on MacArthur's experiences at the City News Bureau of Chicago. MacArthur also co-wrote, with Edward Sheldon, a play called Lulu Belle, which was successfully staged in 1926 by David Belasco. MacArthur was friends with members of the Algonquin Round Table. He shared an apartment with Robert Benchley and briefly dated Dorothy Parker. His second marriage was to the stage and screen actress, Helen Hayes, from 1928 until his death. They lived in Nyack, New York. They were preceded in death by their daughter, Mary, who died unexpectedly of polio in 1949 at the age of 19. The shock of her death hastened MacArthur's own, according to those who knew him. Their adopted son, James MacArthur, is also an actor, best known for playing "Danny Williams" on the American television series Hawaii Five-O.

Among the best liked stories of five or six hundred years ago were those which told of chivalrous deeds -- of joust and tourney and knightly adventure. To be sure, these stories were not set forth in printed books, for there were no printed books as early as the times of the first three King Edwards, and few people could have read them if there had been any. But children and grown people alike were eager to hear these old-time tales read or recited by the minstrels, and the interest in them has continued in some measure through all the changing years and tastes. We now, in the times of the seventh King Edward, still find them far more worth our while than many modern stories. In these early romances of chivalry, Arthur and his knights of the Round Table are by far the most popular heroes, and the finding of the Holy Grail is the highest achievement of knightly valor. The books of any age are for us a record of how the people of that age thought, how they lived, and what kind of men and women they tried to be. The old romances of chivalry will give us clear pictures of the knights and ladies of the Middle Ages. . . . Chivalry of just King Arthur's kind was given up long ago, but that for which it stood -- human fellowship in noble purpose -- is far older than the institution of knighthood or than even the traditions of the energetic, brave, true, helpful King Arthur himself.'Antiquity produced heroes, but not gentlemen,' someone has said. In the days of Charlemagne and Alfred began the training which, continued in the days of Chaucer and Sir Thomas Malory and many, many more, has given to this our age that highest type of manhood.-- U. Waldo Cutler

'That, gentlemen,' said the Secretary of War, 'is the situation. Arvania has stolen the Ziegler plans and formulae. With their acquisition it becomes the most powerful nation on earth. The Ziegler plans are at present in the Arvanian Embassy, but they will be smuggled out of the country soon. Within a month of their landing in Arvania, war will be declared against us. That means' -- he glanced at the tense faces around the conference table -- 'that we have about three months to live as a nation -- unless we can get those plans!'There was a hushed, appalled silence, broken at last by General Forsyte.

Containing a Faithful Account of the Fortunes, Misfortunes, Uprisings, Downfallings, and Complete Career of the Nickleby Family.'I went down into Yorkshire before I began this book, in very severe winter time which is pretty faithfully described herein. As I wanted to see a schoolmaster or two, and was forewarned that those gentlemen might, in their modesty, be shy of receiving a visit from the author of the Pickwick Papers, I consulted with a professional friend who had a Yorkshire connection, and with whom I concerted a pious fraud. He gave me some letters of introduction, in the name, I think, of my traveling companion; they bore reference to a supposititious little boy who had been left with a widowed mother who didn't know what to do with him; the poor lady had thought, as a means of thawing the tardy compassion of her relations in his behalf, of sending him to a Yorkshire school; I was the poor lady's friend, traveling that way; and if the recipient of the letter could inform me of a school in his neighborhood, the writer would be very much obliged. I went to several places in that part of the country where I understood the schools to be most plentifully sprinkled, and had no occasion to deliver a letter until I came to a certain town which shall be nameless. The person to whom it was addressed, was not at home; but he came down at night, through the snow, to the inn where I was staying. It was after dinner; and he needed little persuasion to sit down by the fire in a warm corner, and take his share of the wine that was on the table. I am afraid he is dead now. . . .' -- Charles Dickens
